Such experience have been said to be the most beautiful experiences that one can ever have with wildlife. Mountain gorillas are not found in any zoo as they are purely a wild animal looking for a reason more than one why trekking to see mountain gorillas is the most sought after tourist activity in Uganda, Rwanda and DR Congo. East Africa Gorilla Safaris sells low-cost gorilla tours and Big Five safaris across here in Africa, including Tanzania, Kenya and Ethiopia. The company has its offices in Uganda and Rwanda and works day and night in order to make sure that travelers do not experience any difficulties. Many places such as the Serengeti and Masai Mara are ideal for breathtaking views of the great migration of millions of animals across the land, while cultural tours give individuals the opportunity to interact with and learn from the native African people.

Gorilla Trekking Destinations

Gorilla tours are conducted in Uganda, Rwanda, and the DRC which are the only remaining areas where mountain gorillas can be found. It is estimated that 1064 gorillas live in the Virunga mountains and Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Parks such as the Virunga located in the DRC, Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, and Mgahinga National Park in Uganda have been established for the conservation of these remarkable animals. Tracking these apes is an experience that many travelers are willing to spend on, and every year, thousands of such adventurers go on a trek to see those creatures.

Gorilla Permit Costs: In Rwanda, the costs for one person are $1,500 for a permit, while Uganda has $800 for foreign non-residents and $450 for DR Congo. Limitation of permits is imposed, thus booking should be done at least for six months prior to the travel date.

Season and Guidelines

Trekking trips are best done during the dry season (namely from June–September and December–February) when gorillas can be easily accessed. During the rainy season, the terrain becomes more difficult for trekking due to the presence of slippery paths and uncertainty of weather. Every day, only 8 trekkers are allowed to visit a particular gorilla family, thereby reducing the impact on the animals.

Gorilla Habituation Experience: Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is the only national park which gives visitors a chance to have a 4-hour habituation experience at $1,500 where visitors see how human beings are able to deal with gorilla groups.

Comparative Analysis: Destination

Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park is popular for its proximity as it is only 3 hours drive from Kigali. Reportedly, Uganda’s Bwindi National Park has got the highest number of mountain gorillas. The Democratic Republic of Congo has most mountain as well as eastern lowland gorillas (or Grauer’s) as seen in Kahuzi-Biega National Park. But the security issues regarding Congo makes it advisable for the travelers to confirm on the situations before going.

Packing for the Trek

Trekking in the muddy terrain of these rainforests entails certain prerequisites such as carrying high quality gaiters, rain jackets, warm clothes, a knapsack, gloves, and hiking boots. Such valuables assist one in remaining at ease and appreciating the trek across the montane rain forests.
