Ruvubu National Park

Ruvubu National Park, in northeastern Burundi along the Tanzanian border, is the country’s largest protected area and its closest equivalent to the open savanna parks found further afield in Tanzania and Kenya. The park is built around the Ruvubu River, whose wide, meandering course supports large hippo pods and Nile crocodile alongside the buffalo, topi, roan antelope, and duiker that graze the surrounding woodland and grassland.

Because Burundi’s tourism infrastructure is still developing compared to its larger East African neighbors, Ruvubu sees a fraction of the visitor numbers found in the region’s better-known reserves, which means game drives here tend to be quiet, unhurried, and free of other vehicles. The park is also a strong destination for birdlife, with the river’s wetland margins drawing a wide range of waterbirds alongside the woodland and savanna species typical of the wider region. Visits are generally arranged through a specialist operator familiar with Burundi, since the park’s facilities remain modest compared to those found in more established safari destinations nearby.
