5 Days Double Gorilla Trekking Uganda (Bwindi + Mgahinga)
Tour Overview
The 5 Days Double Gorilla Trekking Uganda safari is an exceptional primate journey that combines two distinct ecosystems: Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. By trekking in both parks, travelers experience contrasting landscapes, different gorilla families, and varied forest environments within one comprehensive itinerary.
Bwindi is an ancient rainforest of steep ridges, tangled vines, and mist-filled valleys, home to nearly half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas. Mgahinga, part of the larger Virunga Mountain range, offers dramatic volcanic scenery, bamboo forests, and sweeping high-altitude views. Together, they provide a richer understanding of gorilla habitats and the conservation efforts that protect these endangered primates.
This five-day adventure is designed for those seeking depth—two separate gorilla encounters, scenic highland drives, cultural interaction, and immersion in Uganda’s southwestern wilderness.

Detailed Itinerary: 5 Days Double Gorilla Trekking Uganda (Bwindi + Mgahinga)
Day 1: Arrival and Transfer to Bwindi
Your safari begins upon arrival at Entebbe International Airport or Kigali International Airport. After meeting your professional guide, you embark on a scenic drive toward southwestern Uganda. The journey winds through rolling hills, terraced farmland, and small trading centers that reveal daily rural life.
As you approach Bwindi, the landscape grows increasingly dramatic. Thick forest blankets steep slopes, and the air feels cooler at altitude. Upon arrival at your lodge near the park, you receive a briefing about trekking procedures, conservation guidelines, and what to expect during the upcoming adventure.
The evening is restful, accompanied by the sounds of the forest and anticipation for the first gorilla trek.
Day 2: Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest
After an early breakfast, you transfer to the park headquarters for registration and briefing. Small trekking groups are assigned to specific habituated gorilla families to ensure minimal disturbance and an intimate experience.
Entering Bwindi’s dense rainforest is both exhilarating and humbling. The terrain can be steep and muddy, requiring steady footing and patience. Rangers interpret forest signs, identifying plant species and explaining the intricate ecology that sustains the gorillas.
When the gorilla family is located, the experience becomes unforgettable. A silverback may be seen seated confidently, watching over his group. Females groom one another, infants cling to their mothers, and juveniles tumble playfully among the foliage. Visitors are allowed one hour in their presence, a brief yet deeply moving encounter that leaves a lasting impression.
Returning to the lodge in the afternoon, you have time to relax or take part in optional community visits to learn about local culture and conservation partnerships.
Day 3: Transfer from Bwindi to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
After breakfast, you depart Bwindi and journey south toward Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. The drive is scenic, passing through highland villages and offering views of the Virunga volcanoes rising dramatically along the border with Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Mgahinga’s landscape contrasts sharply with Bwindi’s dense forest. Here, bamboo slopes and open montane vegetation stretch toward volcanic peaks. The park is smaller but equally captivating, forming part of the greater Virunga ecosystem.
Upon arrival at your lodge, you settle in and enjoy panoramic views of the volcanoes. The evening is quiet, allowing time to prepare for your second gorilla trek in a new and distinct habitat.
Day 4: Gorilla Trekking in Mgahinga
Your second trekking day begins with a briefing at the park headquarters. Mgahinga is home to a habituated gorilla family that moves across bamboo forests and volcanic slopes, offering a different trekking experience from Bwindi.
The terrain here can involve gradual ascents through bamboo stands and montane forest. The scenery is open and dramatic, with views of volcanic cones rising above the tree line. Tracking the gorillas in this environment feels expansive, shaped by altitude and sweeping horizons.
Once located, you spend another hour observing the gorilla family. Comparing behaviors and social interactions between the two parks enriches the experience. Subtle differences in group dynamics, habitat, and movement patterns become evident.
After returning to the lodge, the afternoon is free for relaxation. Optional activities may include a short volcano hike or cultural visit to the Batwa community, the traditional forest inhabitants who once lived within these landscapes.
Day 5: Departure
The final morning offers one last opportunity to admire the Virunga volcanoes. After breakfast, you begin the return journey to Entebbe or Kigali. The scenic drive provides a gentle transition from wilderness to urban life.
Arrival at the airport concludes the five-day safari, leaving you with profound memories of two gorilla encounters in two distinct ecosystems.
