Detailed Itinerary: 2 Days Rwanda Gorilla Trekking Safari
Day 1: Transfer to Volcanoes National Park
Your journey begins with pickup from Kigali followed by a scenic drive northwest toward Volcanoes National Park, located in the Virunga Mountain range near the borders of Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The drive takes approximately 2–3 hours and passes through Rwanda’s iconic rolling hills, rural villages, and terraced farmland, offering a glimpse into local life and culture. Depending on arrival time, you may visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial or local craft markets before departing the city.
Upon arrival near the park, you check into your lodge with views of the mist-covered volcanoes. The remainder of the day is spent relaxing, preparing for the trek, and receiving a briefing about gorilla trekking guidelines, safety protocols, and conservation efforts.
Dinner and overnight at the lodge.
Day 2: Gorilla Trekking and Return to Kigali
After an early breakfast, you transfer to the park headquarters for registration and a pre-trek briefing from experienced rangers. You are assigned to a specific gorilla family group based on fitness level and preferences before entering the forest.
The trek duration varies from one to several hours depending on the gorillas’ location, moving through bamboo forests, volcanic slopes, and dense vegetation. Once the gorillas are located, you spend one unforgettable hour observing them as they feed, groom, play, and interact within their family group. Watching a silverback protect his family or juveniles playing nearby is a powerful wildlife experience that few people ever witness.
After the trek, you return to the lodge for lunch before beginning the drive back to Kigali. Arrival is typically in the late afternoon or evening, marking the end of your remarkable gorilla safari adventure.
