Lopé National Park Lodges

Lopé National Park lies in central Gabon and combines rainforest with pockets of savanna in a way that is unusual for the region, a mix that earned it UNESCO World Heritage status for both its ecological and archaeological value. It is one of the more accessible of Gabon’s major parks, reachable by rail from Libreville, and is particularly known for its mandrill population — the world’s largest monkey species, seen here in troops that can number in the hundreds.

Lodges near Lopé are generally small and set at the forest-savanna boundary, giving access to both habitats without long transfer times. Guided walks and vehicle-based game drives are used depending on the terrain, with forest elephants, buffalo, and a range of primate species among the regular sightings alongside the mandrills the park is best known for.

Getting There

The train journey from Libreville to Lopé is itself part of the appeal for many visitors, cutting through forest scenery that is otherwise difficult to access, and makes Lopé one of the more straightforward Gabon parks to combine with a wider itinerary.
