Detailed Itinerary: 9 Days Rwenzori Hiking Safari
Day 1: Arrival in Entebbe – Transfer to Fort Portal
Arrival at Entebbe International Airport and transfer to Fort Portal, a scenic town at the foothills of the Rwenzori Mountains.
Evening briefing on the trekking itinerary, safety measures, and altitude acclimatization. Overnight in Fort Portal.
Day 2: Fort Portal to Nyakalengija – Trek to Bujuku Valley
Drive to Nyakalengija, the trailhead for the Rwenzori trek. Begin the hike into Bujuku Valley, passing montane forests and streams.
Set up camp or check-in at the mountain hut and prepare for higher-altitude trekking. Overnight in Bujuku.
Day 3: Bujuku Valley to John Matte Hut
Continue trekking through bamboo zones and lower alpine vegetation. Ascend gradually towards John Matte Hut, enjoying panoramic views of peaks, glaciers, and waterfalls.
Wildlife sightings include duikers, monkeys, and diverse bird species. Overnight at John Matte Hut.
Day 4: John Matte Hut to Elena Hut
Ascend through afro-alpine moorland and glacial valleys towards Elena Hut. The terrain becomes steeper with rocky paths and occasional snow patches.
Scenic viewpoints offer breathtaking vistas of Mt. Stanley and surrounding peaks. Overnight at Elena Hut.
Day 5: Elena Hut to Margherita Peak (Optional Summit)
Optional summit of Margherita Peak, the highest point of the Rwenzori Mountains (5,109 meters). Early morning departure to reach the glacier-capped peak, witnessing snowfields, alpine lakes, and dramatic cliffs.
Return to Elena Hut for rest and recovery after the demanding ascent. Overnight at Elena Hut.
Day 6: Descent to Bujuku Valley
Begin the descent through afro-alpine terrain and glacial valleys, retracing the trail with stops for photography and wildlife observation.
Overnight in Bujuku Valley or nearby camp to rest before continuing the descent.
Day 7: Bujuku Valley to Nyakalengija – Exit Trailhead
Complete the descent to Nyakalengija trailhead, passing forests, waterfalls, and river crossings.
Transfer back to Fort Portal for overnight accommodation and relaxation after the trek.
Day 8: Fort Portal – Crater Lakes & Cultural Exploration
Optional day trip to Fort Portal’s crater lakes and local communities. Explore scenic lakes, visit traditional villages, and interact with local guides to learn about the region’s cultural and natural heritage.
Return to Fort Portal for overnight.
Day 9: Transfer to Entebbe – Departure
Drive back to Entebbe International Airport for onward international departure, concluding your 9-day Rwenzori Hiking Safari.
