3 Days Chimpanzee Trekking in Nyungwe Forest
Tour Overview
High in the southwestern corner of Rwanda, where rolling hills fold into one another like green silk and morning mist lingers long after sunrise, lies one of Africa’s oldest and most biologically significant rainforests. Nyungwe Forest National Park is not simply a protected area; it is a living, breathing ecosystem that has endured for millions of years. Its tangled vines, towering mahogany trees, and echoing valleys shelter extraordinary biodiversity—and among its most captivating inhabitants are chimpanzees.
A 3-day chimpanzee trekking safari in Nyungwe is an immersive rainforest experience shaped by altitude, adventure, and authenticity. Unlike the open savannah landscapes many travelers associate with East Africa, Nyungwe offers a dense montane forest environment where wildlife is tracked on foot, where the terrain is dramatic and untamed, and where every step into the jungle feels purposeful.
This short yet deeply enriching itinerary allows you to experience Rwanda’s scenic countryside, trek through one of the continent’s most important primate habitats, and encounter chimpanzees in their natural environment while contributing to conservation efforts that protect them.
The Significance of Nyungwe Forest
Nyungwe Forest National Park covers more than 1,000 square kilometers and forms part of the Albertine Rift ecosystem, a globally recognized biodiversity hotspot. The forest sits at elevations ranging from approximately 1,600 to nearly 3,000 meters above sea level, creating a cool, mist-laden climate that sustains its lush vegetation.
This ancient rainforest is home to around 500 chimpanzees and at least 12 other primate species, including large troops of Angolan colobus monkeys, grey-cheeked mangabeys, L’Hoest’s monkeys, and owl-faced monkeys. Over 300 bird species have been recorded here, many endemic to the Albertine Rift, alongside hundreds of plant species, orchids, butterflies, and amphibians.
Nyungwe is also ecologically vital. It feeds major rivers that contribute to both the Nile and Congo basins, making it a crucial watershed for the region. Conservation efforts here extend beyond tourism; they safeguard water systems, biodiversity, and community livelihoods.
Chimpanzee trekking in Nyungwe is therefore not just a wildlife activity. It is participation in a carefully managed conservation model that balances tourism, research, and environmental protection.
