4 Days Double Gorilla Trekking Safari in Bwindi
Tour Overview
A 4-day double gorilla trekking safari in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park offers one of the most immersive primate experiences in Africa, allowing travelers to encounter mountain gorillas on two separate trekking days within their natural rainforest habitat. Bwindi is a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its ancient biodiversity, steep forested terrain, and exceptional concentration of endangered mountain gorillas, with nearly half of the world’s remaining population living within its boundaries. Trekking twice provides a deeper understanding of gorilla behavior, social dynamics, photography opportunities, and a more complete wilderness experience.
This itinerary typically begins and ends in Entebbe or Kampala and is ideal for wildlife enthusiasts, photographers, conservation supporters, and travelers seeking an extended connection with these remarkable primates. The journey also includes scenic drives through Uganda’s countryside, cultural interactions, and relaxation within the beautiful mountainous landscapes of southwestern Uganda.

Detailed Itinerary: 4 Days Double Gorilla Trekking Safari in Bwindi
Day 1: Transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Your safari begins early in the morning with pickup from your hotel or airport in Entebbe or Kampala. You will travel southwest through Uganda’s rolling countryside, passing traditional villages, agricultural landscapes, and terraced hills. A stop at the equator crossing is often included for photographs and refreshments before continuing toward the Kigezi Highlands, sometimes referred to as the “Switzerland of Africa” due to its dramatic scenery.
As you approach Bwindi, the terrain becomes increasingly mountainous with dense rainforest covering the slopes. You will arrive at your lodge in the afternoon or evening depending on your sector location, which may include Buhoma, Rushaga, Nkuringo, or Ruhija. After check-in, you will relax, enjoy dinner, and prepare for your first gorilla trekking experience the following day.
Day 2: First Gorilla Trekking Experience
After an early breakfast, you transfer to the park headquarters for a briefing conducted by Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers. During the orientation, guides explain gorilla behavior, trekking procedures, and safety guidelines before assigning you to a habituated gorilla family group. Accompanied by rangers and trackers, you begin your trek through dense rainforest terrain in search of the gorillas.
The trek duration varies depending on the gorillas’ location and movements, ranging from one hour to several hours. Once located, you are allowed one hour in their presence, observing feeding behavior, playful juveniles, dominant silverbacks, and social interactions within the family. The experience is often described as emotional, humbling, and unforgettable.
After returning to the lodge, you spend the afternoon resting and reflecting on the experience. Optional cultural visits to nearby communities or nature walks may be arranged depending on your energy levels. Dinner and overnight at your lodge.
Day 3: Second Gorilla Trekking Experience
Today offers another extraordinary opportunity to trek mountain gorillas, often with a different family group than the previous day. A second trek allows travelers to observe new behaviors, different group dynamics, and additional photographic opportunities. Many visitors report that the second experience feels more relaxed and immersive because they are already familiar with trekking conditions.
Following the trek, you return to the lodge for relaxation. Some travelers choose spa treatments, guided forest walks, or cultural experiences such as visits with Batwa communities to learn about traditional forest lifestyles. Dinner and overnight near Bwindi Forest.
Day 4: Return to Entebbe or Kampala
After breakfast, you begin the return journey to Entebbe or Kampala, enjoying scenic views of southwestern Uganda along the way. Optional stops may include craft markets, photography viewpoints, or the equator crossing depending on your route and schedule. You will arrive in the late afternoon or evening and be dropped off at your hotel or airport for departure, marking the end of your double gorilla trekking safari.
