4 Days Gorilla Trekking & Nyiragongo Volcano Hike
Tour Overview
This four-day adventure combines two of Central Africa’s most extraordinary experiences: mountain gorilla trekking and hiking an active volcano with the world’s largest lava lake. The safari offers an intense blend of wildlife encounters, dramatic landscapes, and physical adventure within one of Africa’s most biologically rich regions. Travelers explore dense equatorial rainforest while tracking endangered gorillas before ascending into volcanic terrain to witness the spectacular lava lake atop Mount Nyiragongo.
The journey typically begins in Rwanda with a transfer across the border into eastern Congo, where conservation efforts within the Virunga region protect both wildlife and unique geological formations. Despite the short duration, this itinerary delivers an immersive expedition filled with unforgettable moments, ranging from intimate wildlife encounters to standing on the rim of a live volcano.

Detailed Itinerary: 4 Days Gorilla Trekking & Nyiragongo Volcano Hike
Day 1: Arrival and Transfer to Virunga Region
Your safari begins with arrival in Kigali or Goma, depending on your flight arrangements. Many travelers prefer Kigali due to its international accessibility, followed by a scenic drive through Rwanda’s rolling hills toward the border of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The journey introduces the dramatic scenery of the Virunga volcanic chain, characterized by fertile landscapes and towering mountains.
After completing immigration formalities, you proceed to your lodge near Virunga National Park headquarters. Upon arrival, park representatives provide a comprehensive briefing covering trekking procedures, safety measures, conservation regulations, and preparation for both gorilla trekking and volcano hiking. The remainder of the day is spent relaxing and preparing equipment for the upcoming adventures.
Day 2: Mountain Gorilla Trekking Experience
Following an early breakfast, you report to the park headquarters for registration and ranger briefing. Groups are assigned based on fitness level and gorilla family locations before entering the forest accompanied by experienced trackers and armed ranger guides.
The trek takes you through dense rainforest, bamboo vegetation, and mountainous terrain, creating a thrilling wilderness experience. Trek duration varies depending on gorilla movement and may last from one to several hours. Along the way, guides interpret the ecosystem, identifying bird species, plants, and signs of wildlife activity.
Once the gorillas are located, visitors spend one unforgettable hour observing them at close range. Watching a silverback display dominance, juveniles play, and mothers nurture infants provides a deeply emotional and educational wildlife encounter. After the experience, you return to the lodge for relaxation and preparation for the next day’s volcano hike.
Day 3: Nyiragongo Volcano Hike and Overnight at Summit
After breakfast, you transfer to the trailhead to begin the hike up Mount Nyiragongo, one of Africa’s most active volcanoes. The ascent typically takes between five to seven hours depending on pace and fitness level. The trail passes through lush forest, volcanic rock formations, and higher-altitude vegetation zones as you gradually climb toward the summit.
Upon reaching the crater rim, you are rewarded with breathtaking views of the massive lava lake glowing deep within the volcano. The experience of standing above the molten earth is both dramatic and surreal. You spend the night in basic but comfortable summit cabins, allowing time to observe the lava lake at different times, particularly after dark when the glowing magma illuminates the sky.
Day 4: Descend and Departure
After an early breakfast at the summit, you begin the descent back to the base of the volcano, which usually takes approximately three to four hours. Upon arrival, you transfer back to Goma or cross into Rwanda for your return to Kigali.
Depending on departure schedules, you may proceed directly to the airport for your onward flight, marking the end of an extraordinary safari combining wildlife, adventure, and geological wonders. The memories of standing meters away from mountain gorillas and overlooking an active lava lake create a truly once-in-a-lifetime African experience.
