Detailed Itinerary: 4 Days Rwanda Gorilla Tour and Golden Monkeys
Day 1: Arrival in Kigali and Transfer to Volcanoes National Park
Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport, you will be welcomed by your guide and transferred to your hotel in Kigali for a short city orientation depending on arrival time. Highlights may include visiting cultural markets or the Kigali Genocide Memorial for historical insight into Rwanda’s past and recovery.
After lunch, you depart for Volcanoes National Park in northern Rwanda, a scenic drive of approximately two to three hours through rolling hills known as the “Land of a Thousand Hills.” Upon arrival near the park, you check into your lodge with spectacular views of the Virunga volcanoes. Dinner and overnight near the park.
Day 2: Gorilla Trekking Experience
After an early breakfast, you transfer to the park headquarters for a briefing conducted by rangers. During this orientation, you will learn about gorilla behavior, trekking rules, and conservation efforts before being assigned a gorilla family group. Accompanied by guides and trackers, you begin the trek through forest terrain in search of the gorillas.
The duration of the trek varies depending on the gorillas’ movements and terrain conditions, ranging from one to several hours. Once located, you spend one unforgettable hour observing them at close range, watching feeding, grooming, and social interactions within the family. This encounter is widely regarded as one of the most profound wildlife experiences in the world.
After the trek, you return to your lodge for relaxation and overnight.
Day 3: Golden Monkey Tracking and Cultural Experience
Following breakfast, you return to the park for golden monkey tracking in the bamboo forest zones. Golden monkeys are highly active and playful primates, offering excellent photography opportunities and a contrasting experience to gorilla trekking. The tracking is generally less strenuous and allows more time observing their energetic behavior.
In the afternoon, you may visit the Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village (Gorilla Guardians Village) to learn about traditional Rwandan culture, music, dance, and community conservation initiatives. Return to the lodge for dinner and overnight.
Day 4: Return to Kigali and Departure
After breakfast, you depart Volcanoes National Park and return to Kigali. Depending on your flight schedule, you may enjoy additional city sightseeing, shopping for souvenirs, or relaxation before transfer to the airport for departure, marking the end of your Rwanda gorilla and golden monkey safari.
