This itinerary offers a refreshing alternative to northern circuit safaris, combining vast, remote wilderness with excellent wildlife viewing and fewer crowds. Nyerere—formerly part of the Selous Game Reserve—is one of Africa’s largest protected areas, while Mikumi is renowned for its open plains and accessibility from Dar es Salaam.

Detailed Itinerary: 5 Days Nyerere & Mikumi Safari
Day 1: Transfer from Dar es Salaam to Nyerere National Park
Your safari begins in Dar es Salaam. You either drive through scenic countryside or take a short domestic flight to Nyerere National Park.
The journey gradually leaves behind coastal urban life and enters rural Tanzania, dotted with villages and baobab trees. Upon arrival at your lodge or tented camp, lunch is served overlooking the surrounding bush.
In the afternoon, enjoy a boat safari on the Rufiji River—one of the highlights unique to Nyerere. Gliding along the water offers a different perspective of wildlife. Hippos wallow in pods, crocodiles bask on sandbanks, and elephants come to drink at the river’s edge. Birdlife is abundant, from fish eagles to colorful kingfishers.
Return to camp for dinner under the African sky.
Day 2: Full-Day Game Drive in Nyerere National Park
After an early breakfast, embark on a full-day game drive across the vast landscapes of Nyerere.
The park’s size and diversity create varied habitats—open savannah, woodlands, river channels, and wetlands. Large herds of buffalo and elephants roam freely, and Nyerere is one of the strongholds for African wild dogs. Lions, giraffes, zebras, and antelopes are commonly sighted.
Unlike more crowded parks, Nyerere offers a sense of true wilderness. You may spend hours exploring without encountering other vehicles, making wildlife encounters feel intimate and authentic.
A bush picnic lunch allows uninterrupted exploration before returning to camp in the late afternoon.
Day 3: Transfer to Mikumi National Park
After breakfast, depart for Mikumi National Park. The drive passes through rural landscapes and rolling hills, gradually revealing Mikumi’s open plains framed by the Uluguru Mountains.
Upon arrival, enjoy lunch at your lodge before heading out for an afternoon game drive.
Mikumi is often compared to the Serengeti for its wide grassy plains. Wildlife viewing is relatively easy due to the open terrain. Large elephant herds, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, and buffalo are common, and lions are frequently spotted resting near termite mounds.
Return to the lodge for dinner and overnight.
Day 4: Full-Day Game Drive in Mikumi National Park
A full day in Mikumi provides ample opportunity to explore different sections of the park.
The Mkata Floodplain is particularly rich in wildlife, attracting numerous herbivores and predators. Lions often patrol the area, and leopards may be seen in acacia trees. The park also hosts over 400 bird species, making it rewarding for bird enthusiasts.
The backdrop of the Uluguru Mountains adds dramatic scenery to the safari experience. Early morning and late afternoon drives are ideal for observing predator activity and capturing stunning photographs.
Enjoy a picnic lunch within the park before returning to your lodge for a relaxing evening.
Day 5: Morning Game Drive and Return to Dar es Salaam
On your final morning, set out for one last game drive as the bush awakens. The soft dawn light casts a golden glow across the plains, offering excellent wildlife viewing and photography opportunities.
After breakfast, depart Mikumi and return to Dar es Salaam by road or domestic flight, concluding your 5-day southern Tanzania safari.
