Detailed Itinerary: 5 Days Queen Elizabeth Safari
Day 1: Transfer from Kampala or Entebbe to Queen Elizabeth National Park
Your safari begins with an early departure from Kampala or Entebbe, heading west toward the Albertine Rift Valley. The journey is scenic and engaging, passing through rolling hills, traditional homesteads, and lush countryside.
A stop at the Equator crossing offers a chance for photographs and a brief exploration of this geographical landmark. As you continue, tea plantations carpet the hills around Fort Portal, and the landscape becomes increasingly dramatic as you approach the park.
By late afternoon, you arrive at your lodge overlooking the savannah or the Kazinga Channel. After check-in, enjoy dinner with the sounds of the African wilderness in the background.
Day 2: Morning Game Drive and Kazinga Channel Boat Cruise
The day begins before sunrise as you set out for a morning game drive in the Kasenyi plains. This area is known for its open grasslands that attract large herds of Uganda kob, buffalo, elephants, and warthogs. Predators such as lions and leopards patrol the plains, often seen during the cooler morning hours.
The backdrop of the distant Rwenzori Mountains adds grandeur to the landscape, while the golden morning light enhances wildlife photography opportunities.
In the afternoon, experience one of the highlights of the park—a boat cruise along the Kazinga Channel. This natural waterway connects Lake George and Lake Edward and hosts one of the highest concentrations of hippos in Africa. Crocodiles bask along the banks, elephants gather to drink, and countless bird species line the shores.
The cruise offers close-up wildlife viewing and a peaceful perspective on the park’s aquatic ecosystem. Return to your lodge for dinner and overnight.
Day 3: Transfer to Ishasha Sector – The Tree-Climbing Lions
After breakfast, journey south toward the remote Ishasha sector of the park. The drive itself is a scenic exploration of varying habitats within Queen Elizabeth National Park.
Ishasha is globally renowned for its tree-climbing lions. Unlike most lions that rest on the ground, these lions are often seen lounging in large fig trees, draped across branches in a uniquely photogenic pose. Researchers believe this behavior may help them escape insects or gain a cooler vantage point.
Aside from lions, Ishasha is home to topi, buffalo, elephants, and numerous antelope species. The quieter atmosphere of this sector makes wildlife encounters feel intimate and undisturbed.
Spend the night at a lodge in Ishasha, surrounded by raw wilderness.
Day 4: Crater Lakes and Kyambura Gorge Exploration
Return toward the northern section of the park, exploring the volcanic crater lakes that dot the landscape. These ancient craters provide panoramic viewpoints over shimmering lakes framed by forested hills.
You may opt for a guided nature walk in Kyambura Gorge, often referred to as the “Valley of Apes.” This lush gorge cuts dramatically through the savannah and is home to a small population of chimpanzees along with other primates and forest wildlife.
The contrast between open savannah and dense tropical forest highlights the ecological diversity of Queen Elizabeth National Park.
Later in the afternoon, enjoy a relaxed game drive or leisure time at your lodge.
Day 5: Morning Game Drive and Return to Kampala or Entebbe
On your final morning, embark on one last game drive to capture any wildlife encounters you may have missed. The early hours are ideal for spotting predators before the heat of the day sets in.
After breakfast, begin the journey back to Kampala or Entebbe, reflecting on the remarkable diversity experienced over the past five days.
You return not just with photographs, but with vivid memories of open plains, dramatic sunsets, hippo-filled waterways, and the unforgettable sight of lions resting in ancient fig trees.
