Detailed Itinerary: 5 Days Tanzania Safaris
Day 1: Arrival in Arusha and Transfer to Tarangire National Park
Your safari begins in Arusha, the gateway to Tanzania’s northern parks. After a briefing, you depart toward Tarangire National Park, known for its iconic baobab trees and large elephant herds.
As you enter the park, the landscape opens into rolling savannah punctuated by ancient baobabs that appear sculpted by time. The Tarangire River serves as a lifeline for wildlife, particularly during the dry season when animals congregate along its banks.
Game viewing begins immediately. Elephants roam in impressive numbers, often in multi-generational herds. Giraffes browse among acacias, zebras and wildebeest graze in open clearings, and lions may be found resting in shaded grass.
After a full afternoon exploring the park, you proceed to your lodge or tented camp for dinner and overnight.
Day 2: Journey to Serengeti National Park
After breakfast, you depart Tarangire and journey toward Serengeti National Park. The drive offers scenic transitions through the Ngorongoro highlands before descending into the vast plains of the Serengeti.
The first glimpse of the Serengeti is unforgettable. Endless grasslands stretch to the horizon, dotted with acacia trees and kopjes—rocky outcrops that serve as lookout points for predators.
Wildlife is abundant. Depending on the season, you may witness part of the Great Migration, where thousands of wildebeest and zebras move across the plains in search of fresh grazing. Lions, cheetahs, and hyenas follow closely behind.
Arrive at your lodge or camp within the Serengeti in the late afternoon, where the sounds of the wilderness accompany your evening.
Day 3: Full Day in Serengeti National Park
Today is dedicated entirely to exploring the Serengeti. An early morning game drive offers the best opportunity to observe predators while they are most active. The golden light of dawn illuminates the plains, creating ideal conditions for photography.
The Serengeti ecosystem supports an extraordinary density of wildlife. Large lion prides patrol territories, leopards rest in acacia branches, and cheetahs scan the plains for prey. Elephants, giraffes, buffalo, and countless antelope species complete the scene.
You enjoy a picnic lunch within the park, allowing for uninterrupted exploration. The vastness of the Serengeti provides a profound sense of freedom and wilderness.
In the late afternoon, return to your accommodation for dinner under the African sky.
Day 4: Serengeti to Ngorongoro Crater
After a final morning game drive in the Serengeti, you depart toward the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The journey ascends into cooler highland terrain, offering panoramic views over the crater rim.
Ngorongoro Crater is the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera and one of Africa’s most remarkable wildlife destinations. Within its enclosed walls lies a self-contained ecosystem supporting an astonishing concentration of animals.
Arrive at your lodge near the crater rim in the afternoon. The elevated position offers sweeping views across the crater floor, often shrouded in mist at sunset.
Day 5: Ngorongoro Crater Game Drive and Return to Arusha
Early in the morning, you descend 600 meters into the Ngorongoro Crater for a half-day game drive. The crater floor hosts a diverse range of habitats including grasslands, wetlands, and acacia forests.
Wildlife sightings are often exceptional. Large herds of wildebeest and zebras graze alongside buffalo, while lions are frequently seen resting in the open. Ngorongoro is also one of the best places in Tanzania to spot the endangered black rhino.
Flamingos gather around soda lakes, and hyenas patrol the plains. The density of wildlife within the crater creates an almost surreal safari experience.
After a picnic lunch, you ascend back to the crater rim and begin the return journey to Arusha, concluding your five-day Tanzania safari.
