Detailed Itinerary: 6 Days Kilimanjaro Hiking Safari
Day 1: Machame Gate (1,800m) to Machame Camp (3,000m)
Your trek begins at Machame Gate after registration and briefing by park authorities and guides. The trail winds through dense montane rainforest, where you may encounter colobus monkeys and diverse birdlife.
After 5–7 hours of steady hiking, you arrive at Machame Camp. Here you settle into camp, enjoy dinner prepared by your trekking crew, and rest in preparation for higher elevations.
Day 2: Machame Camp (3,000m) to Shira Camp (3,840m)
The forest gradually gives way to moorland vegetation as you ascend toward the Shira Plateau. The landscape opens dramatically, revealing sweeping views of Kibo Peak.
After 4–6 hours of hiking, you reach Shira Camp. The increased altitude becomes noticeable, and acclimatization strategies—hydration, slow pacing, and rest—are emphasized.
Day 3: Shira Camp (3,840m) to Barranco Camp (3,950m) via Lava Tower (4,630m)
This is a critical acclimatization day. You ascend gradually to Lava Tower at 4,630 meters before descending to Barranco Camp. The “climb high, sleep low” approach significantly aids altitude adjustment.
Barranco Camp is set beneath the imposing Barranco Wall, offering one of the most scenic campsites on the mountain. The day involves 6–8 hours of trekking across alpine desert terrain.
Day 4: Barranco Camp (3,950m) to Barafu Camp (4,673m)
The morning begins with a scramble up the Barranco Wall, a steep but manageable ascent requiring careful footing. The trail then undulates through ridges and valleys before reaching Barafu Camp.
Barafu Camp serves as the base camp for the summit attempt. After an early dinner and rest, preparations are made for the midnight ascent to Uhuru Peak.
Day 5: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) and Descent to Mweka Camp (3,100m)
The summit push begins around midnight. Trekking slowly in freezing temperatures, you ascend via Stella Point before continuing to Uhuru Peak—the highest point in Africa.
Standing at Uhuru Peak provides a profound sense of achievement and panoramic views above the clouds. After photos and celebration, you descend carefully to Barafu Camp for rest, then continue down to Mweka Camp for overnight. This is the longest and most demanding day of the trek.
Day 6: Mweka Camp (3,100m) to Mweka Gate (1,640m) and Departure
A final descent through rainforest leads to Mweka Gate. Upon arrival, summit certificates are awarded to successful climbers.
You transfer back to your hotel in Arusha or Moshi for rest and departure.
