Detailed Itinerary: 6 Days Congo Lowland Gorillas & Lake Kivu Experience
Day 1: Arrival in Kigali and Transfer to Bukavu
The journey begins with arrival in Kigali, Rwanda. After meeting your guide, you travel toward the Cyangugu border and cross into the Democratic Republic of Congo, heading to Bukavu on Lake Kivu’s shores.
The drive is scenic, passing rolling hills, small villages, and lush lakeside landscapes. Upon arrival, you check in at your lodge and receive a briefing on Kahuzi-Biega National Park, gorilla trekking procedures, and safety protocols. Dinner is served overlooking the calm waters of Lake Kivu, a perfect introduction to the region.
Day 2: Transfer to Kahuzi-Biega and Gorilla Trekking Preparation
After breakfast, you head toward the park headquarters in Kahuzi-Biega for orientation. Rangers provide guidance on gorilla behavior, park rules, and trekking safety.
The rest of the day is spent hiking forest trails to acclimate and exploring nearby areas of the park. This preparation ensures you are ready for the more strenuous gorilla trek the following day. Overnight is at a lodge near Bukavu.
Day 3: Lowland Gorilla Trekking in Kahuzi-Biega
Today is the highlight: trekking eastern lowland gorillas. You start early with park rangers who guide you through dense rainforest trails and volcanic foothills. The terrain can be steep and humid, requiring a moderate level of fitness.
When the gorilla family is located, you spend up to one hour observing these magnificent creatures. The eastern lowland gorillas are larger and heavier than mountain gorillas, with powerful builds and distinct social behavior. Mothers care for infants while juveniles play energetically, all under the watchful eyes of the dominant silverback.
After the trek, return to your lodge for relaxation and a well-deserved dinner.
Day 4: Optional Nature Walks and Birdwatching in Kahuzi-Biega
The fourth day allows for optional activities such as guided forest walks, birdwatching, or visits to local viewpoints. Kahuzi-Biega is home to a variety of primates including chimpanzees, as well as rare forest birds, making this day ideal for nature enthusiasts.
Afternoon relaxation at the lodge or lakeside offers a moment to reflect on the gorilla trekking experience.
Day 5: Lake Kivu Exploration and Cultural Encounters
Today is devoted to Lake Kivu. You may take a boat ride to nearby islands, explore fishing villages, or simply enjoy the lake’s scenic beauty. The lake is dotted with small islands, offering opportunities for photography, birdwatching, and interaction with local communities.
A leisurely afternoon allows for relaxation or optional hikes along the lakeshore, immersing yourself in the tranquility of the area before returning to your lodge.
Day 6: Return to Kigali and Departure
After breakfast, you travel back to the Rwanda border and onward to Kigali. The drive provides final glimpses of the highlands, lake vistas, and rural Congolese villages.
Upon arrival in Kigali, you may have a brief city tour or visit local craft markets before transfer to the airport for your departure.
