Detailed Itinerary: 7 Days Gorilla Trekking Rwanda and Primates
Day 1: Arrival in Kigali – City Tour
Arrival at Kigali International Airport and transfer to your hotel. Depending on arrival time, enjoy a guided city tour including the Kigali Genocide Memorial and local craft markets.
Evening safari briefing and overnight in Kigali.
Day 2: Transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park
After breakfast, drive south to Nyungwe Forest National Park. The scenic journey passes rolling hills, tea plantations, and rural villages characteristic of Rwanda’s “Land of a Thousand Hills.”
Afternoon canopy walk experience. The suspended walkway offers panoramic views above the forest canopy and opportunities to spot birds and primates from above. Overnight at a lodge near the park.
Day 3: Chimpanzee Tracking in Nyungwe
Early morning briefing before embarking on chimpanzee tracking. Nyungwe is home to one of East Africa’s largest chimpanzee populations. Guided by experienced rangers, you track habituated groups through dense montane rainforest.
After locating the chimpanzees, spend a regulated hour observing their social interactions. The forest also hosts other primates such as colobus monkeys and L’Hoest’s monkeys. Afternoon at leisure or optional nature walk.
Day 4: Transfer to Volcanoes National Park
Depart Nyungwe and drive north toward Volcanoes National Park. The route includes scenic lakeshores and highland vistas.
Arrive in the afternoon and check into your lodge near the park headquarters. Relax and prepare for gorilla trekking.
Day 5: Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park
Morning briefing at Kinigi before beginning your mountain gorilla trek. You are assigned a habituated gorilla family and guided through bamboo forests and volcanic slopes.
Upon locating the gorillas, spend one regulated hour observing their behavior. Witness silverbacks, mothers with infants, and playful juveniles in their natural habitat. Return to the lodge for rest and reflection.
Day 6: Golden Monkey Tracking & Cultural Visit
Track golden monkeys in the bamboo forests of Volcanoes National Park. These endangered primates are lively and photogenic, often found in large troops.
In the afternoon, visit the Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village (Gorilla Guardians Village) to learn about local traditions, conservation initiatives, and community projects. Overnight at your lodge.
Day 7: Return to Kigali – Departure
After breakfast, transfer back to Kigali. Depending on flight schedule, enjoy optional shopping or a short city stop.
Arrival at Kigali International Airport for onward departure concludes your 7-day Rwanda primates safari.
