4 Days Double Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park
Overview: Two Encounters with the Gentle Giants of the Virungas
The 4 Days Double Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park is designed for travelers who want to go beyond a single encounter and truly immerse themselves in the world of the endangered mountain gorillas. While most visitors experience gorilla trekking once, this itinerary offers the rare privilege of two separate gorilla treks on different days, allowing for deeper appreciation, richer observation, and more meaningful storytelling.
Set in northwestern Rwanda, Volcanoes National Park lies within the greater Virunga Conservation Area and is famed for its dramatic volcanic scenery, dense bamboo forests, and groundbreaking conservation legacy pioneered by Dian Fossey. The park protects several habituated gorilla families, each with its own social dynamics, behaviors, and terrain.
By trekking twice, you gain the opportunity to:
-
Visit two different gorilla families
-
Experience varying trekking routes and forest habitats
-
Observe gorilla behavior more deeply, beyond first impressions
-
Capture better photographic moments as confidence grows
This safari is ideal for wildlife enthusiasts, photographers, primate lovers, and travelers seeking a more profound connection with one of Africa’s most iconic species. Combined with Rwanda’s excellent infrastructure, knowledgeable guides, and comfortable lodges, this short but powerful journey delivers a once-in-a-lifetime experience—twice.

Day 1: Arrival in Kigali & Transfer to Volcanoes National Park
Your journey begins with arrival at Kigali International Airport, where you are welcomed by your professional safari guide. After a short briefing, you depart Kigali for a scenic drive north to Volcanoes National Park, a journey of approximately 2.5 to 3 hours.
The drive takes you through Rwanda’s famously rolling countryside—lush hills, cultivated farmlands, and vibrant roadside communities—offering a gentle introduction to the country’s landscapes and culture.

Day 2: First Gorilla Trekking Experience
After an early breakfast, you head to the Volcanoes National Park headquarters for registration and a detailed briefing by park rangers. You are assigned a gorilla family based on trekking conditions and fitness levels.
Accompanied by expert trackers and armed rangers, you begin your trek into the forest. The hike can range from moderate to challenging, depending on the gorillas’ location, and passes through bamboo forest, thick undergrowth, and volcanic terrain.
When the gorillas are located, you are allowed one magical hour in their presence. During this time, you observe:
Silverbacks asserting quiet authority
Mothers nurturing young infants
Juveniles playing and climbing vegetation
The intimacy of the encounter—often just meters away—is both humbling and emotional.
After the trek, you return to the lodge for lunch and spend the afternoon resting, reflecting, or enjoying the lodge’s surroundings.

Day 3: Second Gorilla Trekking Experience
The second trek offers a completely different perspective.
After breakfast, you once again head to the park headquarters for briefing and assignment to a different gorilla family. Even within the same park, no two treks are alike—each family occupies distinct territory and exhibits unique social behavior.
With greater confidence and familiarity, many travelers find the second trek even more rewarding. You may notice subtle interactions, communication gestures, and social hierarchies that are easy to miss during a first encounter.
This second hour with the gorillas deepens your understanding of their intelligence, emotions, and close genetic relationship to humans. For photographers, it also offers a second chance to refine compositions and lighting.
