5 Days Murchison Falls Safari
Tour Overview
The 5 Days Murchison Falls Safari is a journey into Uganda’s largest and oldest protected area, Murchison Falls National Park. Dominated by the dramatic explosion of the Nile through a narrow rock gorge, this park combines classic savannah wildlife viewing with river-based adventure. It is a landscape where elephants roam golden plains, lions patrol riverbanks, and the mighty Nile surges through the thunderous Murchison Falls.
Spanning vast savannah grasslands, acacia woodland, and riverine forest, Murchison Falls National Park offers one of East Africa’s most diverse safari experiences. The Victoria Nile bisects the park, creating fertile habitats that sustain large concentrations of wildlife. Over five days, this itinerary blends game drives, a Nile boat cruise, and scenic exploration, offering a comprehensive immersion into Uganda’s wild north.

Detailed Itinerary: 5 Days Murchison Falls Safari
Day 1: Arrival and Transfer to Murchison Falls
Your safari begins with pickup from Entebbe or Kampala. The journey north passes through bustling towns, rural villages, and scenic countryside before entering the protected area.
En route, many itineraries include a stop at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, where visitors track white rhinos on foot with trained rangers. This experience complements the park’s wildlife sightings, completing Uganda’s “Big Five” potential during your safari.
Upon entering Murchison Falls National Park, the scenery shifts dramatically. Expansive savannah stretches toward distant hills, dotted with borassus palms and acacia trees. Wildlife sightings often begin immediately, with giraffes, antelope, and buffalo visible along the roadside.
You arrive at your lodge overlooking the Nile or nestled within the savannah. Dinner is served as the sounds of the African night rise from the surrounding wilderness.
Day 2: Morning Game Drive and Afternoon Nile Boat Cruise
The second day begins before sunrise, when wildlife activity is at its peak. The northern sector of the park is particularly renowned for game drives, offering sightings of elephants, Rothschild’s giraffes, hartebeests, and Uganda kobs grazing across open plains.
Predators such as lions and leopards are often active in the early hours, taking advantage of cooler temperatures. Guides interpret animal behavior and track fresh signs of nocturnal movement, creating an engaging and educational safari experience.
In the afternoon, you embark on a boat cruise along the Victoria Nile. The river journey toward the base of Murchison Falls is one of the park’s highlights. Hippos crowd the banks, crocodiles bask in the sun, and elephants wade into the water to drink.
As the boat approaches the base of the falls, the thunderous roar grows louder. The Nile forces its way through a narrow seven-meter gorge before plunging 43 meters below, creating a spectacular display of power and mist. The scene is both dramatic and humbling.
Returning to your lodge in the evening, you reflect on a day defined by wildlife abundance and natural spectacle.
Day 3: Top of the Falls and Delta Exploration
After breakfast, you visit the top of Murchison Falls, where you stand just meters from the roaring cascade. From this vantage point, the force of the Nile is overwhelming, spraying mist into the air as it squeezes through the rocky cleft. The panoramic views of the surrounding landscape provide exceptional photographic opportunities.
Later in the day, optional activities may include a boat excursion to the Nile Delta, where the river meets Lake Albert. This region is excellent for birdwatching, including the rare shoebill stork, and offers additional wildlife sightings along tranquil waterways.
The diversity of habitats—river, savannah, and wetland—ensures that each day in the park reveals something new.
Day 4: Extended Game Drive and Nature Exploration
The fourth day allows for deeper exploration of the park’s ecosystems. A full-day game drive with a packed lunch provides extended time to search for predators and observe herds moving across the plains.
The landscape shifts from open savannah to woodland and riverine forest, supporting diverse species including bushbucks, warthogs, and primates in the southern sector. The sheer scale of Murchison Falls National Park creates a sense of vastness rarely matched elsewhere in Uganda.
Afternoon relaxation at the lodge offers panoramic views of the Nile, where elephants and hippos often appear along the banks at dusk.
Day 5: Return to Kampala or Entebbe
On the final morning, you enjoy breakfast before beginning the return journey to Kampala or Entebbe. The drive provides one last glimpse of Uganda’s rural landscapes and vibrant countryside.
Arrival in the city marks the conclusion of the five-day safari, leaving you with lasting memories of roaring waterfalls, abundant wildlife, and the mighty Nile.
