5 Days Rwanda Family Gorilla Safari

Planned around the questions families ask before a first African trip, how far will the kids need to walk, how long are the drives, this 5-day itinerary balances a single gorilla trek against lighter, kid-friendly activities, with buffer time built into each day. Because this itinerary is built around a fixed departure date, reserving the gorilla permit early is the single most important booking step, well ahead of arranging lodges or transport.

5 Days Rwanda Family Gorilla Safari Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Kigali

You’ll be met at the airport and transferred to your family-friendly hotel, with the evening free for a welcome dinner and an early night after the flight. The approach into Musanze offers the first clear look at Karisimbi and Bisoke, the two volcanoes most associated with the park, rising directly behind the town.

Day 2: Transfer to Volcanoes National Park & Cultural Village

A morning drive brings you to Musanze, and the afternoon is spent at the Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village, where traditional dance performances and craft demonstrations tend to be a hit with younger travelers. Local guides, several of them former poachers turned conservation ambassadors, lead traditional dance performances and banana-beer brewing demonstrations, with a chance to try basket weaving or archery.

Day 3: Gorilla Trekking Day

Gorilla trekking is subject to the park’s minimum age policy of 15 years; for family members below that age, an alternative golden monkey trek can be arranged in the same forest, at a shorter and gentler pace suited to children. Trekking groups are capped at eight visitors per gorilla family, a rule set by the park authority specifically to limit stress on the habituated groups.

Day 4: Lake Kivu Family Day

The whole family heads to the shores of Lake Kivu for a relaxed day of swimming, a boat ride, and lunch by the water, a welcome change of pace after the previous day’s activity. Lake Kivu’s calm, gently sloping shoreline makes it one of the more manageable swimming spots in the region for families with children, unlike many of East Africa’s larger lakes.

Day 5: Return to Kigali & Departure

A morning drive returns the group to Kigali in time for your departure flight, with a stop along the way if time allows. Families often appreciate a slightly earlier departure from the lodge on the final day, building in extra buffer in case young children need a stop along the way.
