3 Days Fly-In Rwanda Gorilla Trek for First-Timers
August 16, 20265 Days Rwanda Family Gorilla Safari
August 16, 2026This itinerary pairs Rwanda’s headline activity with a destination most first-time visitors never hear about, the twin lakes of Burera and Ruhondo in the hills near Volcanoes National Park. A physically demanding trekking day is deliberately followed by a genuinely restful one on the water. Trekking permits and the domestic flight this itinerary depends on should ideally be confirmed together, since availability on each can shift independently of the other.
4 Days Rwanda Gorilla Trekking & Twin Lakes Relaxation Itinerary
Day 1: Kigali Arrival & Transfer to Musanze
After being met at the airport, you’ll drive north to Musanze, checking into your lodge with time to rest and receive your trekking briefing ahead of tomorrow’s hike. This same road is used daily by gorilla trekkers heading to all five sectors of Volcanoes National Park, so it’s generally well maintained compared to more remote park access roads elsewhere in the country.
Day 2: Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park
Following the morning ranger briefing, you’ll trek into the forest to spend an hour with a habituated gorilla family, watching them move, feed, and interact at close range before hiking back out. A wooden walking stick, handed out free at the ranger post, turns out to be genuinely useful on the muddier, root-crossed sections partway up the slope.
Day 3: Twin Lakes Burera & Ruhondo
Instead of heading back toward Kigali, today takes you into the surrounding tea-growing hills to Lake Burera and Lake Ruhondo. A relaxed boat outing on the water and a stop at a scenic viewpoint over both lakes make for a quiet contrast to the previous day’s trek. Lake Burera and Lake Ruhondo are separated by a narrow strip of land locals call the Congo-Nile divide, and the viewpoint between them is one of the more photographed spots on this route.
Day 4: Return to Kigali & Departure
A scenic drive returns you to Kigali, with time for a final stop before your driver-guide transfers you to the airport for departure. The final drive typically passes back through Musanze’s market town before joining the main highway south, giving a last look at daily Rwandan life before the airport.
