3 Days Bwindi Gorilla Trekking
Tour Overview
A 3-day Bwindi gorilla trekking safari is one of the most popular short wildlife adventures in East Africa, offering travelers the rare opportunity to encounter endangered mountain gorillas in their natural rainforest habitat. Located in southwestern Uganda, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its ancient biodiversity, dense tropical vegetation, and dramatic mountainous landscapes. The park protects nearly half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas, making it one of the most significant conservation areas on the continent.
This short itinerary is ideal for travelers with limited time who still want to experience one of the world’s most extraordinary wildlife encounters. The safari typically begins and ends in Entebbe or Kampala and combines scenic countryside drives, cultural encounters, and the unforgettable experience of trekking through rainforest terrain to spend time with a habituated gorilla family.

Detailed Itinerary: 3 Days Bwindi Gorilla Trekking
Day 1: Transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Your journey begins early in the morning with pickup from your hotel or the airport in Entebbe or Kampala. You will travel southwest through Uganda’s beautiful countryside, passing rolling hills, traditional villages, and agricultural landscapes. Along the way, there is usually a stop at the equator crossing for photographs and refreshments before continuing toward the mountainous Kigezi region, often referred to as the “Switzerland of Africa.”
The drive offers spectacular scenery with terraced hillsides and lush vegetation as you approach Bwindi Forest. You will arrive in the late afternoon or evening, check into your lodge, and relax while preparing for the next day’s adventure. Dinner and overnight stay near the park.
Day 2: Gorilla Trekking Experience in Bwindi Forest
After an early breakfast, you transfer to the park headquarters for a briefing conducted by Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers. During this orientation, you will learn about gorilla behavior, safety guidelines, and trekking protocols. You will then be assigned to a specific gorilla family group and begin the trek into the dense rainforest accompanied by experienced guides and trackers.
The trek duration varies depending on the movement of the gorillas and terrain conditions, ranging from one to several hours. Once the gorilla family is located, you are allowed one unforgettable hour in their presence. Observing mountain gorillas at close range — watching them feed, groom, play, and interact — is often described as a deeply emotional and life-changing wildlife experience.
After returning from the trek, you receive a trekking certificate and spend the afternoon relaxing at your lodge or visiting nearby communities for cultural experiences. Dinner and overnight stay near Bwindi.
Day 3: Return to Entebbe or Kampala
Following breakfast, you begin the return journey to Entebbe or Kampala. The drive again offers scenic views of Uganda’s countryside, with optional stops for lunch, souvenirs, or photography along the way. Arrival is typically in the late afternoon or evening, depending on road conditions and departure plans. You will be dropped off at your hotel or the airport for your onward flight, marking the end of your memorable gorilla trekking safari.
