5 Days Easy Rwanda Safari: Gorillas, Culture & Nyanza
August 16, 20264 Days Rwanda Gorilla Trekking & Twin Lakes Relaxation
August 16, 2026This itinerary replaces the standard road transfer to Volcanoes National Park with a short scenic flight from Kigali, cutting travel fatigue out of a first Rwanda trip entirely. It follows the same trekking format as any standard permit, just with more energy and daylight left for you to enjoy it. Gorilla permits here are allocated per family per day rather than per lodge, so availability depends on how far ahead the whole itinerary, not just accommodation, is booked.
3 Days Fly-In Rwanda Gorilla Trek for First-Timers Itinerary
Day 1: Fly-In to Volcanoes National Park
After landing in Kigali, you’ll transfer directly to a domestic airstrip for a short scenic flight to the Musanze area, avoiding the multi-hour road transfer entirely. On arrival, you’ll check into your lodge with time to rest and receive a full briefing on the following day’s trek. Pyrethrum, grown here for its natural insecticide compound, is one of the more distinctive crops visible along this stretch of road, alongside the more familiar tea and potato fields.
Day 2: Gorilla Trekking Day
An early start takes you to park headquarters for the ranger briefing before setting out with trackers who have already located a gorilla family. You’ll spend an hour observing the group in the wild before hiking back to meet your vehicle. Rain gear is worth packing regardless of season, since the bamboo zone traps moisture even on days that start dry, and gaiters help against the stinging nettle common along the lower trail.
Day 3: Fly Back to Kigali & Departure
A morning flight returns you to Kigali, leaving the rest of the day free before your driver-guide transfers you to the airport for your onward departure. Because the return leg on this itinerary is a short flight rather than a long drive, there’s usually a bit more flexibility on the morning’s timing before heading to the airstrip.
