Detailed Itinerary: 5 Days Gorilla Trekking Rwanda and Primates
Day 1: Arrival in Kigali and Transfer to Volcanoes National Park
Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport, you will be welcomed by your guide and transferred into the city for a short orientation depending on arrival time. You may visit key cultural and historical sites, including memorial centers or local markets, to gain insight into Rwanda’s history and development.
After lunch, you depart for Volcanoes National Park in northern Rwanda, a scenic drive through rolling hills and rural landscapes often referred to as the “Land of a Thousand Hills.” Upon arrival near the park, you check into your lodge surrounded by spectacular views of the Virunga volcanoes. Dinner and overnight near Volcanoes National Park.
Day 2: Gorilla Trekking Experience
After an early breakfast, you transfer to the park headquarters for a ranger briefing before beginning your gorilla trek. Accompanied by professional trackers and guides, you hike through forested slopes searching for a habituated gorilla family. Trekking duration varies depending on the gorillas’ movements and terrain, ranging from one to several hours.
Once the gorillas are located, you spend one unforgettable hour observing them at close range, witnessing feeding behavior, playful juveniles, and social interactions led by the dominant silverback. After returning from the trek, you relax at the lodge and enjoy the peaceful mountain environment. Dinner and overnight near the park.
Day 3: Transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park
Following breakfast, you begin the scenic journey south toward Nyungwe Forest National Park. The drive offers spectacular views of Rwanda’s countryside, tea plantations, terraced hillsides, and Lake Kivu landscapes along the way. Lunch is typically enjoyed en route before continuing through mountainous terrain toward the rainforest.
Arrival at Nyungwe is in the late afternoon or evening, where you check into your lodge surrounded by ancient forest vegetation. Dinner and overnight near Nyungwe Forest.
Day 4: Chimpanzee Tracking and Canopy Walk
Early morning begins with chimpanzee tracking in Nyungwe Forest. After a ranger briefing, you enter the forest searching for habituated chimpanzee groups known for their energetic movements and vocal communication. The experience offers opportunities to observe feeding, grooming, and social interactions among one of humanity’s closest relatives.
In the afternoon, you enjoy the famous canopy walkway experience suspended above the forest, providing panoramic views of the rainforest ecosystem and opportunities to observe birds and primates from a unique perspective. Return to the lodge for relaxation, dinner, and overnight.
Day 5: Return to Kigali and Departure
After breakfast, you depart Nyungwe Forest and travel back to Kigali. Depending on your schedule, you may visit cultural sites, craft markets, or enjoy lunch in the city before transfer to the airport for departure, marking the end of your Rwanda primate safari.
