5 Days Lowland Gorilla Safari Congo
Tour Overview
The 5 Days Lowland Gorilla Safari Congo is an extraordinary journey into the vast equatorial rainforest of eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. This itinerary focuses on tracking the rare eastern lowland gorillas in Kahuzi-Biega National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its rich biodiversity and dramatic volcanic landscape.
Unlike the mountain gorillas of Uganda and Rwanda, eastern lowland gorillas are larger in size, with broader bodies, shorter fur, and powerful builds adapted to life in lowland tropical forests. Kahuzi-Biega is named after two dormant volcanoes, Mount Kahuzi and Mount Biega, which rise above the dense rainforest canopy and form part of this remarkable ecosystem.
Over five days, this safari offers a rare opportunity to trek through untamed forest, observe a distinct gorilla subspecies, and experience the cultural and natural richness of eastern Congo.

Detailed Itinerary: 5 Days Lowland Gorilla Safari Congo
Day 1: Arrival and Transfer to Bukavu
Your adventure begins with arrival in Kigali, Rwanda, followed by a scenic transfer by road toward the Cyangugu border. After crossing into the Democratic Republic of Congo, you continue to the lakeside town of Bukavu, located on the shores of Lake Kivu.
Bukavu serves as the gateway to Kahuzi-Biega National Park. The journey itself is striking, passing rolling hills, rural communities, and panoramic lake views. Upon arrival at your lodge, you receive a briefing about gorilla trekking procedures, park regulations, and safety measures.
Dinner is served overlooking Lake Kivu, with calm waters reflecting the surrounding hills. The evening is restful, allowing you to prepare for the forest trek ahead.
Day 2: Lowland Gorilla Trekking in Kahuzi-Biega
After an early breakfast, you transfer to the park headquarters for registration and orientation. Rangers provide detailed guidance on gorilla behavior and conservation rules before assigning trekking groups.
The trek begins in the dense lowland rainforest. The terrain is humid and lush, with towering trees, tangled vines, and a rich understory. Unlike mountain gorilla trekking at higher altitudes, this experience unfolds in lower-elevation tropical forest, where biodiversity is exceptionally high.
When the gorilla family is located, the encounter is profound. Eastern lowland gorillas are noticeably larger than their mountain relatives, with impressive silverbacks commanding quiet authority. You observe feeding, grooming, and social interactions during the permitted one-hour visit.
The forest feels raw and untamed, heightening the sense of discovery. After returning to the park headquarters, you transfer back to your lodge in Bukavu for relaxation and reflection.
Day 3: Nature Walk or Mount Kahuzi Hike
The third day offers optional activities within Kahuzi-Biega National Park. For adventurous travelers, a guided hike on Mount Kahuzi provides panoramic views of the surrounding forest and distant landscapes. The ascent is moderately challenging but rewarding, revealing the volcanic origins of the park.
Alternatively, guided nature walks offer opportunities to observe birdlife, primates, and diverse plant species within the forest. Kahuzi-Biega is home to chimpanzees, forest elephants, and numerous endemic birds, making it a fascinating destination beyond gorillas alone.
In the afternoon, you return to Bukavu for leisure time by Lake Kivu, enjoying the tranquil lakeside environment.
Day 4: Cultural Experience and Lake Kivu Exploration
This day allows for cultural exploration around Bukavu and Lake Kivu. Visits to local markets and communities provide insight into daily Congolese life, traditional crafts, and regional history.
A boat ride on Lake Kivu offers scenic views of surrounding hills and islands, creating a peaceful interlude between forest adventures. The lake’s calm waters and cooler breezes provide a refreshing contrast to the humid rainforest.
Dinner at your lodge concludes the day, with time to reflect on the diversity of landscapes encountered during the safari.
Day 5: Departure
After breakfast, you transfer back to the Rwanda border and continue to Kigali for departure. The journey retraces scenic routes through hills and lakeside landscapes, offering final glimpses of Central Africa’s natural beauty.
Arrival in Kigali marks the end of your five-day adventure.
