Tour Overview
The 5 Days Ngorongoro & Serengeti Safari is a classic Tanzanian wildlife journey through two of Africa’s most iconic conservation areas: Ngorongoro Conservation Area and Serengeti National Park. This itinerary offers an extraordinary combination of dramatic volcanic landscapes and vast predator-rich plains, delivering one of the most complete safari experiences on the continent.
Ngorongoro is famed for its immense crater, the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera, where wildlife thrives within a natural amphitheater. Detailed Itinerary: 5 Days Ngorongoro & Serengeti Safari
Day 1: Arrival and Transfer to Ngorongoro Highlands
Your journey begins in Arusha or Kilimanjaro International Airport, where you meet your safari guide. The drive toward the Ngorongoro highlands reveals Tanzania’s changing scenery—coffee plantations, Maasai villages, and fertile farmland give way to cooler, mist-covered hills.
Upon reaching the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater, the view is breathtaking. The vast caldera floor lies below, dotted with forests, open grasslands, and shimmering soda lakes. Wildlife can often be seen even from the rim viewpoint.
You check into your lodge perched along the crater edge or nearby highlands. The evening is peaceful, with crisp highland air and sweeping views across the crater landscape.
Day 2: Game Drive in Ngorongoro Crater
After an early breakfast, you descend into the Ngorongoro Crater for a full-day game drive. The crater floor is home to one of Africa’s highest densities of wildlife, making it possible to see a wide variety of species within a single day.
Large herds of buffalo and wildebeest graze the plains, while elephants roam the forested areas. Lions are commonly sighted resting in the grass or stalking prey. The crater is also one of the best places in East Africa to spot the endangered black rhino.
A picnic lunch is enjoyed near a hippo pool, surrounded by birdlife and dramatic scenery. The enclosed nature of the crater creates a concentrated and intimate safari experience, offering excellent photographic opportunities.
In the late afternoon, you ascend the crater walls and return to your lodge for dinner and overnight.
Day 3: Transfer to Serengeti National Park
After breakfast, you journey westward toward the Serengeti National Park. The drive itself is a scenic safari, passing Maasai pastoral lands and gradually opening into expansive grasslands.
As you enter the Serengeti, the landscape transforms into endless plains punctuated by rocky kopjes and scattered acacia trees. Wildlife sightings often begin immediately, with zebras, gazelles, and giraffes roaming freely.
An afternoon game drive introduces you to the Serengeti’s extraordinary ecosystem. Lions often rest on kopjes, cheetahs scan the plains for prey, and hyenas move through the grasslands in search of opportunity.
Dinner and overnight are at a safari lodge or tented camp in the Serengeti, where the sounds of the wilderness echo after dark.
Day 4: Full Day in Serengeti National Park
A full day in the Serengeti allows deeper exploration of its diverse habitats. Early morning game drives are particularly rewarding, as predators are active and the golden light enhances the beauty of the landscape.
Depending on the season, you may witness part of the Great Migration, when thousands of wildebeest and zebra move across the plains in search of fresh grazing. River crossings, if occurring during your visit, are dramatic spectacles of survival.
Even outside migration season, the Serengeti remains vibrant year-round. Large prides of lions, solitary leopards resting in trees, and elegant cheetahs hunting in open grasslands create thrilling encounters.
A picnic lunch in the bush ensures uninterrupted wildlife viewing. As the sun sets, the sky ignites in warm hues, casting long shadows across the savannah.
Day 5: Morning Game Drive and Return to Arusha
Your final morning begins with an early game drive, capturing the Serengeti in its most tranquil state. The soft dawn light reveals wildlife stirring across the plains.
After breakfast at camp, you begin the journey back toward Arusha, either by road or optional flight from the Serengeti airstrip. The drive retraces scenic landscapes, offering final glimpses of Tanzania’s remarkable terrain.
Arrival in Arusha concludes the safari.
