Day 4: Nyabitaba Hut to John Matte Hut
The trek continues with a hike from Nyabitaba Hut to John Matte Hut. This segment covers about 7 kilometers and involves a gain of 750 meters in elevation. The trail takes you through bamboo forests and along the Mubuku River, offering stunning views of the surrounding mountains. As you ascend, you’ll pass through the famous “Giant Lobelia Zone,” characterized by unique vegetation. John Matte Hut, located at 3,420 meters, provides a cozy shelter for the night.
On the fifth day, you’ll trek from John Matte Hut to Bujuku Hut, covering approximately 6 kilometers and gaining about 650 meters in elevation. Day 6: Bujuku Hut to Elena Hut
The trek from Bujuku Hut to Elena Hut is a shorter but steeper ascent, covering about 4 kilometers and gaining 500 meters in elevation. The trail leads you through the Upper Bigo Bog and up to Elena Hut, located at 4,562 meters. This high-altitude hut provides breathtaking views of the surrounding glaciers and peaks. Elena Hut serves as the base for the final ascent to Margherita Peak.
Day 7: Summit Margherita Peak and Descend to Kitandara Hut
The highlight of your trek is the ascent to Margherita Peak, the highest point in the Rwenzori Mountains at 5,109 meters. The climb is challenging, involving steep ice and rock sections, but the reward is the stunning view from the summit. After reaching the peak, you’ll descend to Kitandara Hut, located at 4,023 meters, for the night. The total distance for the day is about 10 kilometers.
The descent continues with a trek from Kitandara Hut to Guy Yeoman Hut, covering approximately 9 kilometers and losing about 1,000 meters in elevation. The final day of your trek involves a descent from Guy Yeoman Hut to the Nyakalengija trailhead, covering about 15 kilometers.
