Day 1: Arrival in Kigali

You’ll be met at the airport and transferred to your Kigali hotel, with the rest of the day free to rest after your flight and adjust before heading into the itinerary proper the next morning. Rwanda’s paved highway network makes this drive smoother than similar routes elsewhere in the region, and the volcanoes are usually visible well before reaching Musanze itself on a clear day.

Day 2: Transfer to Volcanoes National Park

A scenic morning drive brings you to Musanze. In the afternoon, you’ll visit the Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village near the park, where former poachers turned conservationists demonstrate traditional dance, brewing, and craft-making, a gentle first cultural immersion before trekking day. The drive gains noticeable elevation over its final stretch, and temperatures drop several degrees by the time Musanze’s cooler, higher-altitude climate takes over.

Day 3: Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park

After the ranger briefing, you’ll trek into the forest to spend an hour with a habituated gorilla family. The hike itself varies in length depending on where the family is that morning, and your guide sets the pace to match your fitness level. Local porters, generally hired from the surrounding community, are available at the trailhead to carry daypacks for a modest fee, which also directly supports the villages bordering the park.

Day 4: Drive South to Nyanza

Today you’ll travel south to Nyanza, former seat of Rwanda’s royal court, visiting the King’s Palace Museum and its traditional royal compound, including the famous long-horned Inyambo cattle kept there. The afternoon is left unhurried, with time to explore the surrounding countryside at a relaxed pace.

Day 5: Return to Kigali & Departure

A morning drive returns you to Kigali, with time for a final coffee or light shopping before your driver-guide transfers you to the airport for your departure flight. With the gorilla trek behind you by this point, the drive back into Kigali is generally treated as a wind-down rather than a rush, though there’s still a built-in buffer for airport check-in.
