5 Days Rwanda Gorilla and Golden Monkey Trekking Tour
Tour Overview
The 5 Days Rwanda Gorilla and Golden Monkey Trekking Tour is an immersive primate adventure set in the dramatic highlands of northern Rwanda. Centered around Volcanoes National Park, this journey offers two of Africa’s most sought-after wildlife encounters: the endangered mountain gorillas and the lively, rare golden monkeys.
Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park forms part of the greater Virunga Massif, a chain of ancient volcanoes that straddle Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Cloaked in mist and thick montane forest, the park provides a breathtaking backdrop for close encounters with primates that exist nowhere else on earth.
Over five carefully paced days, you will trek through bamboo forests and volcanic slopes, experience Rwanda’s rich conservation story, and witness wildlife in one of Africa’s most protected ecosystems.

Detailed Itinerary: 5 Days Rwanda Gorilla and Golden Monkey Trekking Tour
Day 1: Arrival in Kigali and Transfer to Volcanoes National Park
Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport, you are warmly welcomed and briefed about the adventure ahead. Kigali, known for its cleanliness and rolling hills, offers a calm introduction to Rwanda.
After departing the city, the drive north to Volcanoes National Park takes approximately two to three hours. The journey winds through terraced hillsides, small rural villages, and fertile farmland. Rwanda’s nickname, the “Land of a Thousand Hills,” becomes clear as the landscape unfolds in layered green ridges.
As you approach the park, the Virunga volcanoes rise dramatically against the horizon, often veiled in mist. You arrive at your lodge in the late afternoon, settle in, and enjoy dinner while preparing for the following day’s trek.
Day 2: Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park
An early breakfast is followed by a transfer to the park headquarters in Kinigi for registration and briefing. Rangers assign each group to a habituated gorilla family based on fitness level and availability.
The trek begins through farmland at the park’s edge before entering dense forest. The terrain can vary from gentle slopes to steeper volcanic inclines, depending on the gorillas’ location that day. Experienced trackers move ahead, communicating via radio to locate the family.
When you finally encounter the gorillas, the experience is profound. A dominant silverback may sit calmly observing his surroundings, while juveniles play energetically in the undergrowth. Mothers cradle infants against their chests, feeding quietly as the group interacts in natural harmony.
You are allowed one precious hour in their presence. The closeness, the intelligence in their eyes, and the sheer size of the silverback create an unforgettable connection.
After descending from the forest, you return to your lodge for relaxation and reflection on one of Africa’s most extraordinary wildlife encounters.
Day 3: Golden Monkey Trekking in Volcanoes National Park
Today’s adventure takes you back into the forest in search of golden monkeys, a rare and endangered species found only in the Virunga region.
Golden monkeys inhabit the bamboo zones at the base of the volcanoes. Unlike the gentle stillness of gorillas, golden monkeys are energetic and playful. They leap from branch to branch with astonishing agility, their bright golden-orange fur contrasting vividly against the green bamboo.
The trek is generally less strenuous than gorilla trekking, yet equally rewarding. Observing these social primates as they forage and interact offers a fascinating glimpse into a different primate world.
After the trek, return to the lodge for lunch. The afternoon may be spent at leisure or exploring nearby cultural initiatives that showcase Rwanda’s traditional music and crafts.
Day 4: Optional Activities and Scenic Exploration
This day allows flexibility for further exploration. You may choose to hike to Dian Fossey’s tomb, paying tribute to the legendary primatologist who dedicated her life to mountain gorilla conservation in the Virunga region. The hike provides historical insight and sweeping views of the volcanic landscape.
Alternatively, a visit to the Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village offers interaction with local communities and insight into Rwanda’s traditions, music, and storytelling.
For those seeking additional adventure, hiking one of the volcanic peaks such as Mount Bisoke presents an opportunity to explore crater lakes and high-altitude forest scenery.
The afternoon is reserved for relaxation at the lodge, enjoying the cool mountain air and reflecting on the diversity of experiences encountered.
Day 5: Return to Kigali and Departure
After breakfast, you depart Volcanoes National Park and return to Kigali. The drive offers final views of Rwanda’s rolling hills and vibrant countryside.
Depending on your flight schedule, you may visit key landmarks in Kigali such as local craft markets or cultural sites before transfer to the airport for departure.
