Detailed Itinerary: 5 Days Rwanda and Congo Gorilla Trekking
Day 1: Arrival in Kigali and Transfer to Congo
Your safari begins with arrival in Kigali, followed by a scenic road journey toward the border of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The drive showcases Rwanda’s terraced hills, rural communities, and volcanic scenery that defines the greater Virunga landscape. After immigration procedures, you continue to the city of Goma and proceed to your lodge near Virunga National Park.
Upon arrival, you receive a briefing about trekking regulations, conservation rules, and safety procedures. The remainder of the day is spent relaxing and preparing for the upcoming gorilla adventure.
Day 2: Mountain Gorilla Trekking Experience
Following an early breakfast, you report to the park headquarters for registration and ranger briefing. Groups are assigned based on fitness level and gorilla family locations before entering the forest accompanied by experienced trackers and armed ranger guides.
The trek takes you through dense rainforest, bamboo vegetation, and mountainous terrain. The duration varies depending on the movement of the gorillas, sometimes lasting a few hours. Once located, you spend one unforgettable hour observing the mountain gorillas at close range, witnessing their social interactions, feeding behavior, and family dynamics in their natural habitat.
After the trek, you return to the lodge for relaxation and overnight.
Day 3: Transfer to Kahuzi-Biega Region
After breakfast, you depart for the southern Congo region toward Kahuzi-Biega National Park near the lakeside city of Bukavu. The journey offers scenic views of Lake Kivu, volcanic landscapes, and rural communities along the way.
Upon arrival at your lodge, park officials provide an orientation about eastern lowland gorilla trekking procedures and conservation efforts. The afternoon allows time to relax while enjoying views of the surrounding forest and lake environment.
Day 4: Eastern Lowland Gorilla Trekking
This day introduces a different gorilla subspecies and ecosystem. After an early breakfast, you proceed to the park headquarters for briefing before entering the dense rainforest with trackers and guides. Eastern lowland gorillas inhabit thick, humid forests, creating a distinct trekking experience compared to mountain gorillas.
Once the gorillas are located, you spend an hour observing them as they feed, interact, and move through the forest. These gorillas are typically larger-bodied with broader faces and shorter fur, providing a fascinating contrast to mountain gorillas. After the trek, you return to the lodge for relaxation and reflection on this extraordinary dual gorilla experience.
Day 5: Return to Kigali and Departure
Following breakfast, you begin the return journey to Kigali via the Congo–Rwanda border. The scenic drive along Lake Kivu and through Rwanda’s hills provides a beautiful conclusion to the safari.
Upon arrival in Kigali, you transfer to the airport for your onward flight, marking the end of a remarkable five-day adventure featuring two gorilla trekking experiences across Central Africa. The memories of encountering both mountain and eastern lowland gorillas remain a lifelong highlight.
If you would like, I can also create a luxury version, add Nyiragongo volcano hiking, or extend this itinerary to include Uganda gorilla trekking for a three-country primate safari. Just let me know.
