Additional information about Lake Manyara

Visitors had the opportunity to explore the large Manyara Lake, an alkaline lake created by volcanic activity and named for the tree species “Emanyara,” while on a safari in the Republic of Tanzania. With a total surface area of roughly 230 square kilometers, Lake Manyara makes up two-thirds of Lake Manyara National Park. It is regarded as the park’s primary water source and serves as a suitable natural habitat for a variety of wildlife species, including crocodiles and hippos.

With a total surface area of roughly 330 square kilometers, Lake Manyara National Park is one of Tanzania’s smallest national parks. It was named after the soda lake and became a national park in 1960, making it the country’s second oldest park after Serengeti National Park. Lake Manyara is located within the Arusha region in Tanzania‘s northern region.

You have the opportunity to witness numerous bird species and big flamingo groups when you tour this lake. This lake is also distinct in a few respects. For instance, as the water evaporates and salt builds up during the dry season, its waters have a tendency to become more blackish. Additionally, visitors to this lake can engage in activities like boat tours and fishing, which are best enjoyed during the rainy season.

In addition to being renowned for being home to tree-climbing lions, this national park is regarded as a birder’s paradise, home to over 400 different species of birds, and boasting a wide variety of stunning landscapes, including steep rocky slopes, marshes, and dense acacia trees. Tourists can also enjoy a variety of activities while exploring a national park, such as game drives, bird watching, treetop walks, boat cruises, visiting the breathtaking hot springs, and many more.

Lake Manyara game drives
Road transportation or air transportation are the two ways to get to Lake Manyara National Park. Additionally, those who opt for road transportation can travel 126 kilometers from Arusha to the park’s northern gate, making the trip take one to two hours while passing through the stunning country’s escarpments. As an alternative, visitors may choose to travel by air. To do so, they must arrange their flights from Kilimanjaro International Airport, which is roughly 46 kilometers from Arusha town. The flight takes about 40 minutes, landing them at Lake Manyara Airport, after which they can drive a short distance to the park headquarters.

Because Lake Manyara National Park is bordered by tropical forests, woodlands, mountain slopes, lakes, and various savannah types that serve as excellent natural habitats for the species, it is thought to be a permanent home for a great number of wildlife species. Tree-climbing lions, elephants, zebras, leopards, giraffes, impalas, wildebeests, antelopes, baboons, rhinos, and many more are among these creatures.

With more than 400 distinct species of birds, including migratory, aquatic, and terrestrial birds, Lake Manyara National Park is also regarded as a wonderful place to go bird watching. These birds also include spur-winged geese, common teal, common ostrich, blacksmith lapwing white-backed ducks, flamingos, silvery checkered hornbills, black herons, goliath herons, small bee-eaters, and superb starlings, among many others.

Located in the southern section of the park, the hot springs are special because they generate geothermal energy by producing heated group water. Furthermore, tourists always prepare eggs in this water, which is always fascinating, because it boils at an average temperature of about 60 degrees Celsius. Furthermore, the hot springs are located at an elevation of roughly 1600 meters above sea level, in the space between the rift valley escarpments.

There are a number of safari activities available in the national park for anyone who wants to experience some exciting moments. This allows them to explore the park and the lake, which is an exciting adventure while in Tanzania.
