Chimpanzee trekking in Kalinzu Forest: The Kalinzu Forest Reserve is situated in Bushenyi district, close to Queen Elizabeth National Park and Maramagambo Forest, in the southwest region of Uganda. 378 bird species, 6 primate species, including chimpanzees, vervet monkeys, l’hoest monkeys, black and white colobus monkeys, 265 butterfly species, 98 moths, and 414 tree species are among the many wildlife species that can be found in Kalinzu Forest. Mammals from the neighboring Queen Elizabeth National Park, including buffaloes, wild pigs, lions, and leopards, are also drawn to Kalinzu Forest Reserve.
Trekking chimpanzees in the Kalinzu forest
Around 70 chimpanzees have been habituated and are available for hiking in Kalinzu Forest, which is home to around 320 of these primates. In the Kalinzu forest, chimpanzee trekking begins early in the morning with a briefing at the reserve headquarters regarding the guidelines to be followed. Following the briefing, you will begin hiking through the forest accompanied by a knowledgeable guide who is familiar with the various trails.
Because chimpanzees prefer to roam around in search of food, trekking with them in the forest is divided into two sessions: the morning session, which begins at around 8:00 am, and the afternoon session, which begins at around 2:00 pm.
Depending on the chimpanzees’ location, each session can last anywhere from 30 minutes to 4 hours. You can see a variety of birds, primates such as red-tailed, l’hoest, and vervet monkeys, as well as baboons, black and white colobus monkeys, many tree types, and vibrant butterflies while hiking.
You will have the opportunity to spend an hour with the chimpanzees in their natural environment after they are located. This will allow you to observe their daily activities, including feeding, nursing, hunting, grooming young, mating, fighting, resting, and playing, as well as to take pictures and record videos.
The cost of a chimpanzee hiking permit in Kalinzu Forest is USD 100 for non-resident foreigners, USD 50 for locals, and UGX 30,000 for East African nationals. In contrast to other locations, such as Kibale National Park, where chimpanzee trekking permits cost USD 200 per person for foreign non-residents, USD 150 per person for foreign residents, and UGX 150,000 per person for East African citizens, the forest offers inexpensive permits.
Booking a chimpanzee trekking permit in the forest can be done directly through the Uganda Wildlife Authority by calling or emailing the offices, or it can be done through the Kalinzu Forest reception center or a reputable tour operator such as All In Africa Safaris.
You will contact us with your names and the day you would want to visit the chimpanzees when making a reservation through a tour operator. We will verify whether permits are available, and you will be prompted to pay a deposit if they are. We will buy the permit on your behalf as soon as we receive the payment.
Although it is possible to trek chimpanzees in the forest throughout the year, the ideal time to do so is in the dry season, which runs from June to February. Chimpanzee trekking pathways will be dry and passable during the dry season since Kalinzu Forest Reserve receives less or no rainfall than during the wet season, when the tracks are muddy, slippery, and damp, making walking challenging.
Since there are no lodging options in Kalinzu Forest, you can stay at places like Jacana Safari Lodge, Katara Lodge, Mweya Safari Lodge, Park View Safari Lodge, and Engiri Game Lodge in Queen Elizabeth National Park.
