How These Lakes Actually Formed
The violence behind Uganda’s crater lakes happened without a single drop of lava. Phreatomagmatic explosions, triggered when magma rising through the earth’s crust encountered groundwater, generated instantaneous, enormous steam pressure that blew craters directly through overlying rock rather than building up a mountain the way a conventional volcano does. The Fort Portal Field: Ndali-Kasenda and Its Neighbours

Lake Katwe: Where Craters Meet Industry
Sitting inside Queen Elizabeth National Park itself, on the western side of the Kazinga Channel, Lake Katwe is a crater lake with a genuinely unusual claim to fame: it has been actively mined for salt continuously since roughly the 14th century, making it one of the longest continuously worked industrial sites anywhere in East Africa.
Four Hundred Years of Hand-Mined Salt
In precolonial Uganda, salt from Katwe was valued more highly than gold or silver, traded across enormous distances to communities who had no other reliable source, and the mining method used today has changed remarkably little from those centuries-old origins. Workers use hand tools rather than mechanised equipment to extract salt from the lake, with labour traditionally divided along gender lines: men wade into the lake’s lower reaches to cut and scoop solid blocks of rock salt, while women work the shallower salt pans along the margins, harvesting the fine, crusted table salt that forms on the water’s surface as it evaporates. Katwe raises a genuine tension that the region’s purely scenic crater lakes never have to navigate: this is a functioning workplace where families depend on the salt trade for their livelihood, not a preserved cultural performance staged for visiting cameras. Responsible visits generally involve a modest fee that goes directly toward supporting the mining community, and travellers should expect to observe respectfully from designated areas rather than wandering freely among active salt pans, treating the site with the same consideration they’d extend to any working industrial operation elsewhere in the world.
The Bunyaruguru Field: Twenty Craters West of the Park
West of Queen Elizabeth National Park, along the dramatic Kichwamba Escarpment overlooking the Rift Valley floor, the Bunyaruguru crater field, sometimes called the Kichwamba field, holds more than twenty separate crater lakes scattered across Rubirizi District.
Lake Nkugute and Its Neighbours
Lake Nkugute stands as the field’s most prominent crater, formed by the same volcanic activity responsible for the nearby Kitagata hot springs in neighbouring Sheema District, a geothermal feature that draws its own visitors independent of the crater lakes themselves. Beyond Nkugute, the field includes twin lakes Kyema and Kamweru sitting almost side by side, along with Lake Mafuro, Lake Nkuruba, Lake Lyantonde, Lake Nyinambuga, Lake Kifuruka, and Lake Nyabikere among others, a genuinely dense scattering of craters that rewards slow exploration rather than a single quick stop.
A Quieter Alternative
Because Bunyaruguru sits further from the main tourist circuit than the Fort Portal field, it sees considerably fewer visitors despite offering comparable scenery, making it a genuine option for travellers who’ve already done the more established crater lake experience near Fort Portal and want the same geological drama without the same crowds. Several lodges scattered around individual lakes in the field offer overnight stays directly on a crater rim, much like their Fort Portal counterparts, but at a noticeably lower visitor density.
An Ecology Shaped by Isolation
Because most of these craters formed as sealed basins with no natural river connecting them to the wider watershed, many originally held no fish at all, an isolated aquatic environment cut off from the rest of the region’s river systems from the moment the crater filled with water. Fisheries programmes have since introduced tilapia species into roughly seventeen of western Uganda’s crater lakes, and researchers studying these populations have found that fish condition varies noticeably between lakes depending on local fishing pressure and the extent of deforestation around each individual catchment, a reminder that even a landscape as geologically dramatic as this one remains sensitive to ordinary human land use pressures happening at ground level around it.
What to Actually Do at a Crater Lake
Beyond simply admiring the view, most crater lakes across all three fields support a similar menu of activities: guided nature walks along forested crater rims, canoe or kayak trips out onto the calmer lakes, birdwatching along the reed-fringed margins where herons, kingfishers, and a range of waterbirds gather, and, at select lakes with confirmed safe conditions, a genuine swim in cool, volcanic-formed water found nowhere else in East Africa. Because water quality and safety vary meaningfully from lake to lake within each field, it’s worth checking with a local guide or lodge before assuming any given crater lake is safe for swimming rather than treating the entire region as uniformly swimmable.
Best Time to Visit
All three crater fields can be visited year-round, but the drier months, broadly June through August and again from December through February, offer the clearest views across each crater bowl and the easiest access along the dirt roads connecting individual lakes within a field. Salt harvesting at Katwe continues throughout the year regardless of season, since the mining depends on the lake’s ongoing evaporation cycle rather than any particular weather window, making it one of the more schedule-flexible stops on a wider western Uganda itinerary compared with the more weather-sensitive walking and paddling activities generally available at the purely scenic lakes found elsewhere across the region.
Planning a Crater Lakes Circuit
A dedicated western Uganda itinerary can realistically take in all three fields without excessive backtracking, since Fort Portal, Queen Elizabeth National Park, and the Bunyaruguru field sit within a few hours’ drive of one another along the same general western circuit most travellers already follow between Kibale, Queen Elizabeth, and Bwindi.
