Safari in Akagera National Park
Akagera National Park sits in northeastern Rwanda, along the Tanzania border, with swamps and small lakes tracing the Kagera River. Covering roughly 1,200 square kilometers, it ranks as the largest protected wetland in Central Africa and combines savannah, woodland, and water within a single landscape few other regional parks can match. Its position in Rwanda’s low-lying east gives it a warmer, drier climate than the mountainous parks further west.
The Kagera River, which forms much of the park’s eastern boundary and feeds a chain of lakes and wetlands, including Lake Ihema, gives the park its name. Other notable sightings include the elusive shoebill stork, one of the most sought-after birds in Africa, plus fish eagle, grey-backed fiscal, cattle egret, black-headed weaver, Vieillot’s black weaver, hamerkop, and pied crow. Each habitat tends to hold its own specialties, so a morning around Lake Ihema’s papyrus swamps can produce a very different bird list than an afternoon in drier acacia woodland further inland.
Most visitors combine Akagera with Rwanda’s gorilla trekking parks further west, using it as either the opening or closing chapter of a longer itinerary, since it sits within easy driving distance of Kigali and offers a landscape and activity mix entirely different from the mountain forests where gorillas and golden monkeys live. A typical stay runs one to three nights, enough time for a game drive, a boat cruise, and either birdwatching or fishing, depending on interest.
