About Mgahinga National Park

Found in the Virunga Conservation Area with the second population of the threatened mountain gorillas, Mgahinga Gorilla national park is the second gorilla destination in Uganda and the smallest park in the country. Comprising Virunga national park in Democratic Republic of Congo, Volcanoes national park in Rwanda, and Mgahinga Gorilla national park itself, the 434 square kilometre Virunga Conservation Area is formed.

Part of the Virunga chain, Mount Mgahinga, Mount Sabyinyo, and Mount Gahinga, the 34 square kilometer Mgahinga Gorilla national park consists of three volcanoes.

Mount Mgahinga

One of the eight Virunga volcanoes, Mount Mgahinga, sometimes known as Gahinga, is a dormant volcano derived from “a small pike of stones” referred to as Gahinga in Kinyarwanda and Rufumbira.

Mount Sanyinyo

Mount Sabyinyo, the oldest volcano in the Virunga range, marks the junction of the borders of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, and Uganda and in Uganda it is found in Mgahinga Gorilla national park. The Kinyarwanda term “Iryinyo,” meaning “tooth,” names Mount Sabyinyo. Mount Sabinyo’s three peaks are reachable from trekking experience on several tiers.

Mount Muhabura

At 4,127 meters, Mount Muhabura, sometimes known as Mount Muhavura, is the third tallest of the eight volcanoes in the Virunga range situated on the boundary between Rwanda and Uganda’s Mgahinga Gorilla national park. With just one habituated gorilla family, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park boasts around 100 mountain gorillas. Nyakagezi is a family believed to be an always moving gorilla family from the nearby Rwanda.

Making the trip to Mgahinga from Kampala
From Kampala, one travels roughly ten hours to Mgahinga Gorilla national park via towns including Masaka, Mbarara, and Kabale. Your travel to Mgahinga Gorilla national park provides you with a chance to pass the Southern Hemisphere via the Equator crossing close to Kayabwe Town.

From Kampala to Mgahinga Gorilla country you can take either public or private means of transfer; while private means of transportation are advised as they approach to the park.

Note: public methods of transportation such the Jaguar Executive Coaches only finish in Kisoro District meaning you will have to hire a private car to get to the park.

Making the trip from Kigali to Mgahinga
From Kigali city of Rwanda to Mgahinga Gorilla national park, it takes roughly 4–5 hours; a less hours’ drive is compared to from Kampala, the drive to Mgahinga takes you through Musanze Town in the northern Rwanda and cross Uganda via the Cyanika border then continue to Kisoro Town and from there head to Mgahinga Gorilla national park.
