Kenya’s Lakes: A Journey Through the Rift Valley’s Greatest Natural Treasures

Dense papyrus swamps fringe the shoreline, hippos graze on the lake margins at night, enormous Nile crocodiles patrol the shallows, and a remarkable diversity of waterbirds, including African fish eagles, grey crowned cranes, herons, storks, and kingfishers, inhabit the lake and its surrounding vegetation.
Hell’s Gate National Park
Adjacent to Lake Naivasha, Hell’s Gate National Park is unique in Kenya as a park where visitors can walk, cycle, or hike freely among the wildlife without the requirement of being in a vehicle. The dramatic volcanic landscape of Hell’s Gate, with its towering red cliffs, geothermal steam vents, and deep gorge carved by the ancient overflow of Lake Naivasha, provides a spectacular backdrop for wildlife viewing on foot. Zebras, buffaloes, giraffes, and warthogs move calmly among walkers and cyclists, and the gorge walls support large colonies of Rüppell’s vultures and other cliff-nesting birds. Lake Bogoria: Hot Springs and Flamingos

The sight of flamingos feeding in the pink waters of the lake while geysers of steaming water shoot into the air behind them is one of the most surreal and memorable in all of East Africa. Greater flamingos, which are less common at Nakuru, are regularly seen at Bogoria alongside the lesser flamingos that dominate most Rift Valley lakes. The lake is a national reserve and supports the rare greater kudu, a large spiral-horned antelope that inhabits the rocky hillsides around the lake.
Lake Turkana: The Jade Sea
In the remote and arid north of Kenya, Lake Turkana is the world’s largest permanent desert lake and one of the most dramatic landscapes in Africa. Its waters, stained a distinctive jade green by algae and minerals, stretch 250 kilometers from north to south in a landscape of volcanic rock, harsh desert, and dramatic rift scenery that feels like the edge of the world. Lake Turkana is one of the most important Nile crocodile breeding sites in Africa, and its shores support the highest concentration of Nile crocodiles anywhere on the continent. The lake is also of immense significance to paleoanthropology, as the surrounding sediments have yielded some of the most important early human fossils ever discovered.
Lake Victoria: Africa’s Greatest Lake
While most of Lake Victoria lies within Tanzania and Uganda, Kenya’s eastern shore of this vast inland sea forms part of Kisumu and the surrounding area, and it deserves mention in any account of Kenya’s lakes.
